Discussion 8: Supervising Staff
For this task please complete the following:
1) As of today, you have recieved word from top management that due to changes in health insurance coverage (managed care plans) you must reduce staff counseling time. Greenbrier does not have sufficient funding to continue providing counseling sessions beyond the number authorized by managed care. How would you work with staff to reduce average client sessions from 20 sessions down to 6 sessions?
2) Normally, Red Wave encourages a highly participatory style in which staff came together to make decisions affecting the agency. Typically, staff participate in committees or let their views be known in staff meetings. Now, Red Wave is faced with a crisis it has never experienced before–a 25% reduction in funding and the likelihood that 20% of the staff bust be laid off. Should the staff be involved in determining the criteria for who stays and who goes? What actions, if any, could staff take to soften the layoffs?
3) Ms. Menear acknowledges that she is a strong-willed person, and this is reflected in her supervisory style. In fact, her leadership vision and track record of getting things done has catapulted her to being the director of Fast Action. But now she has come to the staff saying that the organization must develop a housing program for homeless persons. In the staff meeting she says, “I know I have been somewhat domineering in the past, but I recognize that for this project to be successful, I will need your support and cooperation.” She has asked you to prepare suggestions on how this project-and future projects-can be implemented with your enthusiasic participation. What are your suggestions?
