Sara Henderson Hay’s sonnet, Rapunzel, gives the titular character a voice and depth of
expression not found in the Grimms’ version. Why is it important to revisit old texts with
new critical perspectives? What is it about Rapunzel that makes the story and character so iconic and/or suitable for adaptations? Is it necessary to reinvent fairy tales? Your answer
should consider both the elasticity of the fairy tale and what elements make it particularly
fitting for feminist fairy tale critiques.
