Developmental Competencies Essay.
In this one-page (double-spaced) essay, you will take a close look at a concept of your choice from the “Integrative model for the study of developmental competences in minority children” (Figure 1 from Garcia Coll et al., 1996). You will define the concept, briefly tie in findings from a primary source research article that links the concept to child development, families, or school/community contexts, and discuss how the findings relate to the concept of equity. (CGs: 3, 4; SLOs: 2, 7)
See Garcia Coll et al., (1996), Figure 1 on p. 1896. Choose one concept from the model. For example, within Family, you could focus on racial socialization. Within Segregation, you could focus on social & psychological segregation. Find a recent research study (2014-2023) that examines this construct among racially minoritized children, youth, or families in the United States. Note that the study may use a closely related term (e.g., “isolation” instead of social & psychological segregation); feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

Introduce the concept and define it. Every author defines terms slightly differently, and concepts evolve over time, so prioritize the definition from the more recent paper. Cite the definition using the (Author, year) citation. Explain how the concept fits into the Integrative model of child development.
