Given the fact that television and other forms of mass media now expose speakers to all sorts of dialects, particularly Mainstream American English (MAE), why do the basic dialect divisions in the United States appear to be holding steady and even strengthening? What role, if any, do TV and the internet play in the maintenance of traditional dialect lines? What role do they play in the development and spread of new dialects?
