explored cultural topics on the Spanish Civil War and studied the films films, “La lengua de las mariposas,” and “Silencio roto,” I want you to take a moment to return to the cultural context with a summary film that documents the effects of the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s regime in the 20th century. Just as the films we have already studied, this documentary is from the perspective of those who were silenced under Franco. Here we will view a different type of filmmaking that compliments the creative perspectives we studied in Discussions 1-2.
As we learned in the previous discussion, it is important to note that all three of these films are a cultural memory of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the period that followed it. However, they are made for contemporary audiences and from perspectives that remember that history decades later. How are these perspectives vital to Spain’s understanding of its national identity in the 21st century? How does filmmaking reflect Spain and the Spanish Civil War? Why do these films matter to audiences today in the 21st century?
For the Discussion, you will have more freedom to explore the cultural context and create your own topics. You must use the two online resources (pdf is posted).
