Why am I having you do this assignment?
This project will give you first-hand experience in generating a research idea (question and hypothesis) and finding relevant research to help support your idea.
You will be given an opportunity to hone your research persuasive writing skills by creating a research proposal that will be used to convince your peers that your study should be “funded” so that you can complete it!
You will also be able to show your knowledge of Behavioral Neuroscience using a topic of your own choosing and in a format other than the typical “exam.” You will be able to show your individual creativity, your writing skills, and your oral presentation skills.
What are you expected to do?
You will have to pick a topic in behavioral neuroscience that interests you! (that’s the part due now). This topic can be on sleep (e.g., what happens to your sleep and cognition when you cut caffeine out of your diet), or learning and memory (what are more effective ways to treat PTSD), or language (how does learning a new language effect bilingual vs. unilingual people). Really the only limits are your imagination/interests and having to be linked to behavioral neuroscience.
You can use a “real-world” example from your own life!
Later you will find supporting references and generate a research proposal (that is Part 2).
How will Part 1 be graded?
We will provide feedback to help keep you on track.
You can use “I” and other personal descriptives to explain your connection to the topic.
Detailed instructions:
You will submit a MAXIMUM 1 page (double spaced, 12 pt. font) research topic idea NO EXCEEDING 1 PAGE. No cover page is needed but make sure your name and PantherID are on the first page.
You need to provide a description of the research question you have and a corresponding hypothesis. Don’t just list the research question.
Briefly describe why you are interested in this topic (e.g., do you have personal experience with the topic?)
You should include at least one way your topic idea relates to our course materials in Behavioral Neuroscience (feel free to look at the syllabus for future topics too). If your idea is not on the syllabus, that’s ok but you still need to describe it and explain what you are interested in examining (e.g., synaptic plasticity, learning and memory, etc..).
You need to describe the variables would you be interested in manipulating. This relates to your hypothesis. If you are interested in the effect of caffeine on sleep then your variables would be dosage of caffeine (low, medium, high), which sleep stage your interested in, a cognitive task (e.g., a word recall list), etc…
EVERYTHING LISTED IN THE INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE IN THE ONE PAGE, IF NOT; POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED.
