MUST Use This Template
Type Headline and Date, My Connection, My Thinking, Evidence,
Conclusion. Discuss each point.
1. Headline or Video Title and Date. Simply type the headline or the title of the
video. If you are responding to an NYT article, also include the date that the story or piece was published in the NYT.
2. My Connection. Start with this section of your MR by completing this sentence fragment —“I can (or can’t) relate to this article or video because ………..” How does your identity play a role both in what you choose to read and how you read it? What connection, if any, does this news story or video have to your life and your personal history?
3. My Thinking. Show your thinking. Pay attention to what goes through your mind as you read or observe, thinking critically about your own reaction. How did this news story or video impact you? Did it teach you something? Challenge you? Reassure you? Move you? Make you angry? What emotions did it stir, and why? Which details, quotes, or insights in the piece made the biggest impression on you, and why?
4. Evidence. Critical thinkers use evidence to support the claims they make in
arguments. Google the subject in the news story or video. Do a “fast and dirty” search. Quickly read around the subject. Pick an article or report that either confirms or disconfirms your thinking. In two or three sentences, summarize the evidence.
5. Conclusion. Did writing this change your mind, broaden your awareness,
or confirm what you already knew about this issue? Explain.
