Reflection #1 Questions over Chapter 1: Make sure your thoughts and ideas are supported with specific examples and/or evidence.
1. Think about your favorite doctor. What do you value about him or her? Why? Be specific.
2. What are the traits/characteristics you would look for in an ideal doctor? Where does this ideal come from?
3. For Hippocrates, what was the proper attitude of a doctor toward his patients? How does his attitude anticipate or depart from current relationships between doctors and patients today? Be specific.
4. In today’s world of health care, the medical market is filled with alternative and complementary healers (eg. chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists etc.), with nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants. How does that complicate your understanding of the “doctor-patient” relationship? Be specific on your examples.
5. Think back to your last visit to the doctor’s office and write about your interactions with the physician. How long did you have to wait before your appointment? Where did the appointment take place? Had you seen him or her before? What did you talk about during the examination? Were you given the opportunity to describe and discuss your symptoms? Were you given the time and opportunity to ask questions, and did you receive helpful and easy to understand answers? Be very specific in your responses.
