HEALTH AND DISABILITY ACROSS THE LIFESPAN: Brian Heffernan – Living with Down Syndrome

Words: 300
Pages: 2
Subject: Uncategorized

Paper Guidelines: This assignment is a 2-3 page reaction to, and analysis of, what you learned from Brian Heffernan and his mom Julie Heffernan on Tuesday.
This paper should directly respond to the questions: “How did Brian Heffernan change and/or reinforce your preconceived notions of people with disabilities? How might this shape your personal and/or professional interactions with this population going forward?”
This paper should use a combination of observations and quotes from the lecture, personal reflections, and scholarly outside sources to support your reaction to these questions. This should specifically include:
1. An introductory paragraph that includes a) relevant background/context for your reaction and b) a clear response to the questions above in one or two sentences. Think of this response as your main idea (or thesis) for the paper, which you should explain and support throughout the paper.
2. Content that is more than a summary, but a combination of reaction and analysis. It is expected that you use observations and details from the lecture, but primarily in support of your own, original points. Make sure that your submitted piece is NOT summary-driven, but idea-driven.
3. The use of first-person voice (including use of “I” and “me”) that effectively conveys the reflective aspect of the piece. We want to hear your authentic reaction/thoughts. However, the piece should also include objective details and research beyond your personal feelings and opinions.
4. Observational/reported details, such as visual or auditory elements of the lecture. This could entail important details regarding the Heffernan’s that you witnessed, seminal quotes, and any wisdom/ anecdotes that they shared.
5. Scholarly support in the form of at least ONE outside source that is academic in nature (something formally published and/or peer-reviewed). This support should be quoted or paraphrased, including both an in-text citation and works cited page (APA style). You can use the assigned article if you wish.
6. Respectful, person-first language (e.g., “person with an intellectual disability” is the correct term, NOT “mentally disabled”, “MR”, etc.)
7. Complete use of APA format and citations. The paper should be double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point font. It should include a cover page, running head, and page numbers (note: the cover page does not count toward the page total). For reference: See http://www.easybib.com/guides/students/writing-guide/iv-write/a-formatting/apa-paper- formatting/
8. Effective organization and flow of ideas, including an overarching connection to your main idea
9. Proficient use of written English, including grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

NOTE: Your paper will be submitted through Turnitin. Please remember to hit SUBMIT and CONFIRM and save your receipt. Course Hero and other databases will be cross referenced, including past papers from this class, and any form of plagiarism will result in a grade of zero for this paper.
*3 example papers from previous class are attached. Please gather the information from Brian (down syndrome) from those three papers, thanks!
