Assignment:
Choose a topic that interests you. This can be something you know a lot about, or something you
want to learn more about. Try to choose something that is socially/culturally relevant in some
way. Be specific.
Find 5 sources that address this topic. These can be articles, books, interviews, etc. Use the
library databases. Strive to recognize good sources and bad sources.
Each source must have a specific author. If it does not have one, it is not a valid source.
Document your sources in MY VERSION of MLA format. List them alphabetically by author’s
last name.
For each source, write a paragraph containing the following:
*Author credentials: Who is this author? Why is his/her opinion relevant to this topic?
*Summary of argument: What is this author’s basic message? What is his/her thesis?
*Incorporated quote: Blend a relevant quote from the author into one of your own
sentences.
The citations should be single spaced; the paragraphs should be double-spaced.
EXAMPLE:
White, Kailyn. “She wants professor to motivate, inspire, focus on the real world.” Orlando
Sentinel. 12 August 2016.
White is a student at the University of Central Florida who claims to hate college. Her basic
argument is that college professors should strive to motivate and inspire their students rather than
focus on formatting and technical details. She thinks teachers should do more than “require petty
rules such as font size or page number at the bottom or top of the paper.” Instead, she wants a
teacher “who is excited to come to class and teach what he or she loves.”
