Students will review a book of their choice that relates to any of the broader issues on diversity, multiculturalism, or sociocultural perspective.
▪ Develop an overall thesis based on the book you review. What are the major synthesis/issues raised in the book? What perspective does the author have on the issue?
▪ How does the author support or challenge the issues being discussed? Are research data provided? Historical data? Personal experience?
▪ How do the author’s ideas support or challenge the issues discussed in this course?
▪ Does the author situate her or his discussions within the broader literature on the issue?
▪ What are the implications of the author’s ideas? Do they call for change in educational policy? Do
they suggest a need for more research?
▪ What do you think of the authors’ ideas? Do you agree or disagree with the ideas? Why?
NOTES: Students should craft a 3-page book review genre which is double-spaced and meet the standard of submission for publication [students should check the acceptable format for book review]. An acceptable publishable book review format will include the following: The major book profile including author, book title, publishers and publication date; The thesis of the book; concise summary of each chapter; strong critique that situates the discussion of the book within the broader literature of the issues the book discuss [see attached rubric sections for scoring guidelines].
