Scenario: Marie Van Bakel, CMA (AAMA), is a new medical assistant in a small orthopedic clinic. She was hired by Dr. Carol Schmidt and Dr. Michael Michalski to be their clinical medical assistant. Marie just graduated from a medical assistant school and this is her first job. She is excited to work in orthopedics, which was the same specialty she worked in during her medical assistant practicum. In a small practice, Marie has a variety of different responsibilities compared with a medical assistant in a larger practice. She and the receptionist, Catherine, will be the only staff members in the office four out of five mornings a week because the doctors will be making hospital rounds and will be in surgery. Marie and Catherine need to open the office and prepare for the patients. Marie is also responsible for the inventory of clinical supplies and equipment. During Marie’s interview, Dr. Schmidt expressed her concern about the lack of procedures for ordering and maintaining inventory and would like Marie to develop those procedures. As part of her job, Marie is to manage ordering supplies and ensuring the proper quantities are in stock at all times. Not having much exposure to supplies and ordering during her practicum, Marie realizes she needs to learn about this procedure
