2) In the Introduction to Sociology lecture we discussed the Social Construction of
drug use. Explain how this concept is relevant to the subcultures viewed in this video.
Symbolic Interactionists note the importance of using labels to shape the way we
view people and their behaviors. Give two examples of labels used by people in the
video and explain how it shapes their perception of either those using drugs, those
providing drugs for others, or the process/ ritual of using drugs .
(For example, people within these drug subcultures don’t refer to each other as “drug users” or “drug addicts”. What labels do they use? How do these labels shape the way they view users?)
3) Many viewers are shocked that children are often included in the drug rituals of
the Huichol. Share your reaction. How might outsiders view our (increasing) trend of
prescribing drugs, like Ritalin, to children?
