What the paper should be about/requirements:
The purpose of this writing assignment is to prepare students to discuss dental education topics with their clients. The specific topic for this assignment is dental biofilm.
Students will write a paper using a client case. All students must complete “Dental Biofilm Case: The Pediatric Patient.”
The student will use the client assessment data, i.e., client information, clinical photos, clinic forms, and the client’s questions to develop an outline for the paper. The student must research the topic to find evidence to support the information that is given to the client. A minimum of ONE primary (clinical research study) and TWO secondary sources must be used for CLIENT CASE #1.
Requirements:
The paper must be between 4 and 5 pages in length, word processed using 12-point Times New Roman font, 1” margins, and double spaced. Each paper must be written using full sentences and paragraphs (no bullets) using terminology that is appropriate* for a client who has no background in dentistry. Use of direct quotes in the paper is NOT permissible. Use of slang expressions, abbreviations/acronyms (unless spelled out with the first use), and contractions are not permitted in formal papers (i.e., use do not versus don’t, etc.) Please note that the questions are listed in a numbered format. Your paper should be numbered with its corresponding question, and it should be in paragraph form.
*An exception: use scientific names for specific bacteria if they are implicated in the disease process/condition being discussed.
All sources/references utilized are to be submitted along with the paper.
Utilize the attached grading rubric while completing this assignment.
All information and pictures are included in the attached document.
You may submit your paper multiple times prior to the due date to assess your writing and plagiarism levels.
Dental Biofilm Case:
The Pediatric Client Jason Adams is a 8-year-old new patient to the Litwak Dental Clinic. He has been previously diagnosed with asthma and carries a rescue inhaler. This is his first ever dental appointment, and he is escorted by his mom, Kelly. Kelly states he is in need of a cleaning and examination. As part of the data collection, you complete the Oral Risk Assessment for Caries and Plaque Control Record (see attached photos). Please respond to Kelly’s comments about Jason appropriately using evidence to validate your responses.
Oral Risk Assessment Information:
• Lives in a community with fluoridated tap water
• Does not use a fluoridated mouthrinse
• Does not use a fluoridated prescription gel
• Does not use remineralizing products
• Acidic beverages are watered down by mother
• Eats approximately two snacks per day; typically fruits and vegetables
• Uses a manual toothbrush
• Does not floss
• Brushes teeth two times a day without parental supervision or help
• Multiple areas of dark purple disclosing solution present on teeth
• Generalized pink areas of disclosing solution present on teeth
1. While showing Jason and Kelly the pink/purple disclosing stain on his teeth, mom says, “he did eat a snack before this appointment. I told him to brush his teeth before we left the house. He doesn’t let me touch his mouth or help him brush, but he usually does a really good job on his own.”
Respond to Kelly’s comments and explain what was disclosed and discuss appropriate homecare for Jason.
2. “How did this biofilm form on his teeth? Is it related to his inhaler?”
3. “What is the significance of having to remove the biofilm from his teeth? His baby teeth are just going to fall out and be replaced by his adult teeth.”
4. “You told me his plaque score is 69%. How is that number related to him brushing his teeth?”
5. The dentist recommends that sealants be placed on all erupted permanent first molars. Kelly states she is aware of what sealants are but wants to know if there is a correlation between the need for sealants and Jason’s biofilm. Explain the correlation.
6. Kelly asks “where did he get the biofilm from? Did I give it to him by allowing him to share drinks and food with me?”
