Between roughly the 1930s and 1970s Latin America experienced a significant degree of economic growth. Students will conduct basic research online to try to understand this growth and to explore the following issues:
1. Explain how the overall standard of living improved looking at indicators like the decrease of infant mortality rate or the increase in life expectancy.
2. Discuss the improvement in healthcare and education.
3. Provide an analysis of urbanization during this period.
Each one of you will find different things and there is no problem with that. This is a first attempt at doing research on your own, so please do not be concerned about the problems you will face. Use two hours of your time to conduct this research exercise and do the best you can within that time. Please keep tabs of the kind of work you did. What websites did you explore? Why? What made you trust them? What challenges did you face?
Next class I will ask about your research and at the end of the class you will have to produce a graded audio discussing this issue. This is an open ended activity and we will use it to start learning how to conduct research on our own without having access to a text provided by the professor. I am giving you an assignment with few instructions because I want to find out what you do on your own and later discuss how to improve your research skills online.
