The basic summary of it is:
As the case spells out, the accounting activities at WorldCom between 2000-2002 beg for further examination. One relevant party to the scandal, Ms. Betty Vinson, is a member in good standing of the Institute for Management Accountants professional society. Ms. Vinson, a mid-senior level accountant at WorldCom, is set to stand trial before the review board for the Institute of Management Accountants.
Distinct from (and logically prior to) any legal issues that may bare on her actions is the issue of how to evaluate those actions ethically.
What is needed is an ethical argument (value claim, reason, warrant, backing). Since she is being evaluated as a professional, and not as a citizen, the warrants are to be drawn from the IMA’s professional code of ethics. If a strong argument can be made that Vinson behaved reprehensibly at WorldCom, the board will sanction her by suspending her membership until a future review no sooner than 6 years in the future.
