Readings: Eustace Palmer, Africa: An introduction and Keim and Somerville: Mistaking Africa: Curiosities and Inventions of the American mind
Africa is almost certainly one area of the world about which most Americans know the least. It is characterized by complexity and diversity and with that, stereotypes and distortions. The authors above have provided different perspectives that share a valuable set of knowledge that will attempt to bring light to the challenged subject of stereotypes.
f This assignment is not only an academic one but an attempt to have you bring your life experiences to the discussion. Write an essay in which you share a negative and a positive stereotype about Africa before you started this course. Then, read Palmer’s Introduction and Keim and Somerville (chapter 1 in Modules) and reflect on their convictions with the common application of the word ‘stereotype’. Additionally, listen to a TED talk by the Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie, The dangers of a single story, (See video in Modules). Following your readings and listening, give at least three (3) reasons why stereotypes exist and summarize the lessons the authors share in an attempt to correct stereotypes on Africa. Apply pertinent quotations from the video and the chapters read to buttress your arguments

— Your paper should include a clear introduction with a statement of intent, a well-organized body and a clear conclusion.
— Your essay must be double-spaced and typed in a standard 12 font, Arial or Times New Roman.
— Your essay must be at least four (4) pages in length excluding the cover page and bibliographic page.
— Your essay must include a standard title page and one-inch margins.
— References should follow the APA or MLA format
— Your essay must have all pages numbered.
