Write an essay in which you identify a rich interpretive problem that arises
for readers in Cathy Park Hong’s “Bad English”. Pick a
single passage or a single aspect of either text that contains an interpretive problem you wish to
explore. In identifying the problem, remember that an interpretive problem is “a difficulty that
can be addressed only by interpretation” (HSR, 220). Make a claim about how the writer’s
choices of language and form affect the argument. Articulate the exigence of your argument, and
demonstrate the originality of your claim through your analysis and reflection on evidence.
Keep in mind that your way of seeing is valuable to the assignment and it will be important to
show readers how you come to your understanding based on what the text provides.
