Purpose
Integrate leadership elements (PSLO 1)
Evaluate decisions from a biblical perspective (PSLO 2).

Scripture
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come” (John 16:7-13).

Each week students are required to read a biblically supported devotional geared toward application of a biblical worldview to leadership. The devotional will include a Bible verse, an application, and a set of reflection questions. As a reflection, the parameters of the assignment are flexible. However, students are encouraged to reflect on how the devotional informs their personal leadership philosophy and values.
Leadership Development Reflection 5: The Holy Spirit is Necessary
Topic: Enable Others to Act; Adaptive Leadership, Followership, & Team Leadership
By: Suzana Dobric Veiss
Jesus is encouraging his disciples in light of the fact that he is going away and the disciples have to stay behind. If Christ did not depart, then the Holy Spirit would not have the ability to provide comfort, give discernment, apply salvation, bring blessings of grace, or reveal righteousness. Christ was going away to prepare a place for the disciples and the Spirit was coming to equip, guide, and influence.

While today confusing and conflicting voices abound, effective leadership and followership warrants correct diagnosis of the problem and correct action to address the problem. Christian leaders and followers must learn to discern and seek wisdom. The Holy Spirit has a distinct role in the leading of God’s people. The Spirit leads believers to all truth. This discernment-oriented truth is a life-producing truth. It provides an abundant life in Christ. Christian leaders and followers are empowered by the Holy Spirit to solve problems. The Holy Spirit’s availability is extended to all believers at all times. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is an indispensable gift in calling and guiding leaders.
