Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to get students thinking about the similarities and
differences between the four colonial regions of British North America. This assignment also
serves as a preparatory tool for the first online examination in which a similar potential essay
question might appear. This low-stakes assignment will allow students to articulate what they
know about two regions of British North America in writing and also allow both the student and
instructor to identify areas of informational and conceptual clarity, as well as uncertainty to be
improved upon going forward.
Assignment: This assignment asks students to choose two of the four regions of British North
America and begin to describe their similarities and differences between 1607 and 1720.
In your response to this question, discuss at least 3 of the following 6 categories:
• regional economy
• ethnic diversity
• social class structure
• nature and organization of the labor force
• religion
• demographic profiles (the characteristics of the population)
