Essay Directions
The first essay is due at the end of unit 4. For the first essay, you will focus on the factors associated and necessary for social control.
1. Based on English Common Law explain at least two factors and then compare, and contrast the social control response
variances.
2. Through your research and explanations of the social control variances, compare a state criminal statute with the historical
common law to see how the elements of the crime have evolved.
3. Discuss the motives for the changes in the elements, how the interaction of criminal justice agencies, political influences, and the law may have contributed to these changes, based on society’s needs.
