According to Buss and other Evolutionary Psychologists, “Living poses a number of
problems.” People continue to encounter forces that endanger survival such as, “weather,
food shortages, predators, and hostile conspecifics!” Currently, we need an education to
survive BUT in our inner cities, children frequently encounter these forces AND are
expected to perform well in school. How could inner city students do well in school if they
are faced with these difficulties? Is this the answer to our achievement gap when
comparing suburban and urban children? Black and white children? Rich and poor children? If so, explain. Is education needed to survive in the ghettos of America or should standards change and focus on inner city needs? Please answer all question. Use research to support your answer. (Hint: Maslow theory of hierarchy needs is a good place to begin.)
