2. What do you make of line 1: “mother’s sleep”?, “the State”? Why might “the State” be capitalized?
3. In line 2, what do you think “its belly” is referring to? What about “wet fur”?
4. In your view, why does life seem like a “dream” (line 3) to the gunner?
5. Try to argue which of the three types irony is most apparent in the poem.
6. What do you view as the “message” of the poem? Explain.
