Analyze local crime news using the material we have covered in the first three weeks of the course (Chapters 1-4). You should choose a local Austin, Texas news station and examine coverage of local crime news on its website. KXAN has an exceptionally well-organized crime news section, but you are free to choose a different station (KVUE, CBS Austin, Fox 7, etc.). Just be sure to note which station you are analyzing.
your analysis of the crime news coverage should address the following questions:
1) How do the patterns in crime news compare to what we know about crime and victimization patterns?
2) Does the station’s coverage reflect any of the common issues with media coverage of crime, in terms of overall patterns or reporting within individual stories?
3) How might their coverage shape public opinion and knowledge about crime? And what consequences could this have?
