There are 3 readings
Memos should be about 750 words. They cannot be more than 1200 words. They should do three main
things. (1) Succinctly summarize the main points of each reading (approximately 90% of the memo word
count), (2) briefly discuss the relevance of the readings for society today, for instance by incorporating
news or current events (approximately 7.5% of the memo word count), and (3) at the end of the memo,
pose 2-3 discussion questions (approximately 2.5% of the memo word count)
Memos should include the central arguments/findings of the readings. Including only the central
arguments/findings will help reduce the word count. Memos require only one discussion of the relevance
for society today (e.g., connection to news or current events) for the entire memo, not per reading.
Similarly, memos require only 2-3 discussion questions for the entire memo, not per reading. Discussion

of the relevance for society today should not include personal experiences nor the experiences of anyone
students know.
Use of an author’s exact words requires quotation marks. Use of exact words without quotation marks
constitutes an academic integrity violation. You are welcome to include quotations, though I encourage
you to primarily summarize readings in your own words. Summaries of content in your own words
requires an in-text citation to properly attribute the author. You can include in-text citations in the
following format:
Completeness:
Do the memos include main points from each reading? (20%)
Do the memos include an analysis of how the readings connect to society today? (5%)
Do the memos include discussion questions? (5%)
Accuracy: Do the memos correctly identify the main points from the readings? (50%)
Analysis:
o Is there a thoughtful analysis of how the readings connect to society today? (15%)
o Are the discussion questions thought provoking? (5%)
