Objective 3: Conduct an overview of apocalyptic literature.
Confusing, mysterious, and difficult are words typically associated with the study of apocalyptic literature. This is an accurate portrayal. Apocalyptic literature is obscure to 21st century readers, but it served as an important genre for the persecuted, 1st century church. Though a relatively small portion of biblical literature, it has received a large amount of attention resulting in a significant number of interpretations. Your study of this genre will help explain why such varied opinions abound.
In a single setting, read Matthew 24 & 25 and the book of Revelation using a modern Bible translation. Conduct an online search on the topic of “Apocalyptic literature in the New Testament.” The search should include at least three sources and also cover the use of apocalyptic literature in the Old Testament and Apocryphal writings. Seek to develop a personal descriiption of apocalyptic literature based on your research.
Create an eight to ten slide PowerPoint presentation for a Bible study group that contains the following information:
Basic information on Revelation – authorship, audience, date of writing, doctrinal themes, and Sitz im Leben;
Your personal descriiption of apocalyptic literature; and
A general teaching unit on the characteristics of apocalyptic literature as it appears in the Old Testament, New Testament, and Apocrypha.
All written assignments should be formatted using APA.
