The African slave trade was also known as the Middle Passage because it began with goods leaving Europe and then stopping in Africa to trade those goods for African slaves before setting off for the Americas. The first shipload of African captives to North America arrived at Jamestown, Virginia in August of 1619. Congress abolished the slave trade (but not slavery) effective January 1, 1808. This may have ended the abduction of African’s but the resulting second “Middle Passage” caused harm to the slaves already in North America. Slave holders now traded their “property” within the borders of the United States with many slaves being stripped away from their families and moved out of state.
