Your final paper will be a comparison between Japan and the United States. This should be a 5-to-7- page paper analyzing disillusionment with democracy and how Japanese and American compare and contrast and how each of the two countries would ultimately approach this issue Your are free to select any writing style you are familiar with. All I ask is that you do not switch mid-paper going form one style to another. (i.e. if you start with footnotes, end with footnotes, if you start with in-text citations, end with in-text citations, if you start in APA format, your whole paper should reflect that…etc.) You should have at least 3 external sources, these can be peer reviewed articles, textbooks, research articles from the web, credible news sources, etc. You may use Wikipedia for reference, but it should not be part of your source list. Wikipedia offers a good starting point, but the information provided can be unreliable and is often, altered without factual evidence. Your paper should follow the outline and questions below. It can be helpful to briefly put your answers out, then use the outline as a guide while you write your paper. Policy/Comparison Policy/ Issue: Comparison Countries: INTRODUCTION: Think: What would be an interesting and catchy start to your introduction? Some writers use case history or relevant statistics to catch the reader’s attention. Reread/ or have a friend read your introduction – Can you make improvements/ does your friend offer any suggestions? BODY: Global Problem Explanation Explain the significance of the Policy: History, Impact, what happens if we do not take action. -Policy Comparison What action did each country take? -Policy Analysis What factors influenced the policy choice for each country? (You do not need to make each of these applicable to your paper, it simply serves as a suggestion) History, Government Structure, Political Culture, Political Participation, Political Ideology, Countries Place in the International System CONCLUSION: Did you summarize the issue and highlight key points? ORGANIZATION/COHERENCE: Did you proofread or have someone else read the finished paper? Does it have a coherent “flow” Are the ideas stated in logical order? Are the transitions between sentences and ideas effective and clear? Is the paper itself clear and understandable or confusing? STYLE: How would you rate the style and tone of the paper? Did you use I, ME, MY, OUR or any personal pronouns? (It should be in THIRD PERSON). Is the tone balanced, unemotional, and unbiased? Is the sentence structure too simple or too convoluted? Is it difficult to follow? Is the word choice specific and interesting or dull and general? MECHANICS: Proofread! Grammar, punctuation, spelling? IN-TEXT CITATIONS: Review your work and answer the following: Is all evidence that is not common knowledge cited correctly at the end of the sentence: (author pg. #). Does each in-text citation have a corresponding Works Cited page entry? NO web addresses in the in-text citations? Are quotes minimized? ***You are free to choose your citation style, however, be consistent. In other words: If you start your paper in APA, then use APA style throughout your paper, do not switch mid-work and start citing in a different style. If you start with in-text citations your whole paper should be in-text citation. If you start with footnotes, your entire paper should reflect that. WORKS CITED PAGE: Did you provide a Works Cited page at the end of the paper with all references listed in alphabetical order in correct style?
