answering a research question of your choice related to communication, media, and society. The research project can pertain to anywhere in the world, any country, any culture so long as it explores some aspect of the relationships between communication, media, and society (broadly interpreted) and the importance of these relationships for making sense of the world around us, and so long as it incorporates concepts and themes from the course.

Why?

The primary purpose of this assignment is for you explore a particular topic related to course that you are interested to learn more about. You have the opportunity to engage in a research project that best suits your creative strengths that explores your chosen topic in a way that supplements the knowledge you obtained in class. And best of all it allows you to teach us all more about the topic and to share with us the amazing and diverse skills you can apply to our course content!

How?

Topics need to be appropriately narrowed based upon the assignment length and your chosen media format in order to demonstrate a thorough competency of the subject discussed; i.e. do not bite off more than you can chew.Any project that is not a standard research paper must be approved by the instructor in person or over email. Creativity is encouraged and is part of your grade! But please keep in mind that this is a research project, meaning that regardless of the kind of final product you turn in, it needs to demonstrate thorough and diligent research. Projects should be ~2,000-3,000 words (8-12 pages dbl spcd) or the creative equivalent and should demonstrate integrated group effort if you worked in a team. This means that I should not be able to tell where one student stopped working and another began – it should be a coherent project throughout, reflecting attention from all group members on all portions of the assignment for teams.

Bibliographies and proper use of in-text citations using scholarly research sources are obligatory for all chosen formats, and any project that is not a standard research paper will require an ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (to include a brief descriiption of the source and its content AND a few notes about how you incorporated the source into your project). Bibliographies should use proper Chicago Manual of Style (Author-Date), APA, or MLA formatting. Please review the “Tips on Writing and Research” PPT (on Canvas). You should plan to consult and integrate material/ideas from between 5-8 SCHOLARLY sources (i.e peer-reviewed articles or books; NOT newspapers or online encyclopedias) for your project in addition to other sources that may help you fill in the blanks. Please consider contacting the WARC (writing center)
for help with writing, and the Iwasaki library staff for help with resources.

Final projects are due before the beginning of class on December 13th.

Project Checklist:

Did you submit a project pitch by the due date to allow for maximal project guidance?
Did you submit a project outline and rough bibliography on the due date for feedback?
Did you choose a topic that was appropriately narrow for the scope of the assignment?
Did you choose a topic that was appropriate given your selected media format?
Did you infuse your project with intellectual curiosity, creativity, and critical analysis?
Did you consult and engage with at least 5-8 scholarly resources to help inform your project along with other sources you may have found?
Did you contact the professor and/or the writing center if you had trouble finding appropriate sources or if you ran into other problems along the way or if you didn’t quite understand something you read or something about the assignment or needed help with your writing?
Were you careful not to make broad sweeping claims or generalizations about a certain place, culture, or population? At least not without sources to back it up?
Is your project reflective of your having taken this class? I.e. does it demonstrate that you were able to incorporate, discuss, and/or analyze your topic using the tools and knowledge with which this class provided you?
Did you provide a works cited list or bibliography at the end of your paper?
OR
Did you provide an annotated bibliography if you did any other kind of project than a paper?
Did you double check your citation styles (both in-text and for the culminating bibliography using the hand quick-guide links above according to the bibliographical format you chose?
Did you proofread and edit your paper or media equivalent, checking grammar, spelling, flow, organization, and syntax? Did you go to the writing center for help with this if it’s not your forte?
Did you submit an electronic version of your project on Canvas (or via email if files are too big)?
If you made a movie or similar, did you submit an accompanying scriipt by the due date on Canvas?
Did you come up with a 5-8min (8-12min for teams) presentation to tell us about what you learned in the production of your project?
Did you bask in the knowledge that you acquired during the creation of this project and share that knowledge with your friends and family?
