Content for Your Presentation:
Title slide (make sure you put your name)
Introduce your city/neighborhood/community and the project. Explain what an assessment is, and where you’re doing it.
Road map slide (Table of contents)
Methodology (e.g. data sources you used; who you interviewed, when and where (give a sense of which questions asked, how you structured the interview, open questions?); when, where and how you did your field observations). Have a different slide per methodology.
Describe the demographics, geographic/environmental, economic, social and political characteristics of the community; and the public resources, infrastructure, and institutions within the community. Select the information you feel is most important to understanding this particular community. Use information from your internet, field observations, and interviews. Feel free to add a category. Have one or more slide per category of descriiption.
Describe at least three challenges (inequalities, service gaps, infrastructure issues, etc), including:
Who is impacted (e.g. estimated number and type of people and/or describe the specific demographics) and how they are impacted
Consequences for the community and/or that demographic group
Who benefits from its existence (perhaps who benefits from allocation of resources as they are)
E.g. 20% of the residents, mostly older and low-income, are challenged by the lack of public transportation in the west end of Anytown. This means they don’t have access to groceries or jobs at the local factory without an expensive cab ride. This means higher unemployment and poorer health in Anytown. The cab company, and increasingly Uber, benefits; the local gas station owner, who charges high prices for a few food staples, also benefits.
Describe at least three assets (strengths and resources within the community):
Who is impacted (e.g. estimated number and type of people) and how they are impacted
Consequences for the community
Who created and/or maintains this asset
(e.g. The City Council of Anytown maintains Community Pride Park and Community Center. The park and center benefit the 500 residents who live within a ½ mile radius and the 200 senior citizens who have free daily transportation to the park and center. They benefit from the green space (promotes community cohesion, physical health, and mental health), the organized activities (breaks isolation, promotes physical and mental health), and the free meals for senior citizens and for kids during school breaks (promotes physical health).
Service Gaps:
Based on what you now know about the community, what are two service gaps or unmet needs? For each service gap:
What is the gap and who does it affect?
What could be done to fill the gap?
Which existing resources might enable this gap to be filled?
What barriers may prevent this gap from being filled?
Policy changes:
Based on what you know about the community, what are two policy changes that would benefit the community?
Who has the authority to implement that policy change (the target)? What might compel them to implement that change (strategy)? What are barriers that could interfere with that policy becoming a reality?
Reflection on the Community Assessment Project Experience:
What did you learn about urban communities through this experience?
What did you learn about conducting research from this experience?
Why is it important to assess communities?
