Instructions:
1. The paper should be written in APA format. Use subtitles in writing for the required sections in the rubric. The paper will be electronically submitted on Blackboard by due date. Please also bring a hard copy to submit to instructor. The written paper should be approximately 5-10 pages in length.
2. Choose a drug class of your interest and obtain approval from the instructor. You may choose a drug class from a list provided to you on Blackboard if you wish. Discuss the mechanism of action, therapeutic effects, indications, pharmacokinetics of that class.
3. Choose one representative drug from the above class. Discuss the following: adult and pediatric dosages, modes of administration, adverse effects, contraindications and precautions including pregnancy considerations, interactions (with drugs and food), new/additional information from journal research.
4. Create a one-page patient education/information sheet to educate patients on the representative drug you chose to discuss. The information sheet should be creatively designed to include essential elements of the medication you would want the patients to know and in the language that the patients would understand. Bullets writing style is acceptable. It should be no more than 1 page. The essential elements should at least include what the drug is, why the patient is prescribed the drug, major adverse effects, major drug/drug, drug/food interactions, when the patient should contact the provider, and other important information you would like the patient to know. For example, if you choose the drug class of ACEIs, you could select lisinopril as a representative drug to discuss in the designated categories. Your patient education/information sheet would be on lisinopril. Discuss your selection of a drug class with course instructor if you are unsure.
5. The paper will be based on your textbooks and a minimum of four peer-reviewed/scholarly references published within 5 years. Some examples of acceptable journals include The
American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Clinician Reviews, The Nurse Practitioner, Journal of the American Medical Association, and The New England Journal of Medicine, and The Annals in Internal Medicine, Family Practice Medicine If you are not confident about recognizing peer-reviewed sources, please consult the librarian for assistance. It will be expected that students paraphrase the information from the resources.
