As a UoPeople student, I use peer assessment or peer review every week, primarily summative peer assessment, in which I use a rubric to mark final submissions and is used with written work, such as Discussion Forum and Written Assignments. However, this is the first time I’ve had the chance to employ formative peer assessment for the Learning Journal assignment in my Emotional Intelligence class, where:
1. Students are introduced to the assignment and assessment criteria
2. Students are taught and practice assessing and providing comments.
3. Students write and submit a draft.
4. Students evaluate and provide comments on other students’ drafts.
5. Students consider the criticism they have received and edit their work for final submission.
6. The teacher grades the assignments.
7. The instructor reflects on the class activities.
Peer assessment benefits students in several ways, including receiving more frequent and timely feedback than when the instructor is the only one providing it, receiving feedback on drafts and being able to make improvements, and engaging in the critical analysis and reflection associated with assessing their peers’ work.
Although peer evaluation is a fantastic tool for learning since it involves students in complicated problem-solving processes such as detecting issues and offering solutions. However, one of the primary challenges I’m having is that my classmates often offer grades without providing constructive criticism in written assignment assessment exercises, thus I frequently need to contact the course instructor to re-assess my work.
1. What is feedback?
2. How to provide effective feedback and how to receive not-so-great one with grace and while still learning?
3. How are you leading yourself to provide constructive feedback and to receive positively any feedback you get at UoPeople, while participating in the peer assessment?
4. Moreover, another one of the most important questions we need to ask ourselves while studying EI is: “How am I growing my feedback skills?”
5. What good does it do to understand the theories behind EI if one does not practice what one preaches?
6. What are my two strong points in providing feedback and what are the two points I need to work on and why?
7. What are my two strong points in receiving feedback and what are the two points I need to work on and why?
