Introduction

The ability to explain complex scientific and medical terms in ways that every day people can understand is a useful skill to have when working in the health care field. For your final project you will be making a 10-15 minute oral presentation on a medical condition of your choosing. In the presentation you will be teaching the class about a particular cell, tissue or organ and the organ system it is part of, what goes wrong in the condition you picked and how it is treated.

The purpose of the project is to practice oral communication skills by incorporating what you have learned about professional communication. You will also demonstrate an understanding of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology by researching a disease of one particular organ system.

Assignment Objective:

Create a presentation on a medical condition of your choosing. The purpose is to demonstrate your knowledge of anatomy and physiology of a particular cell, tissue or organ in one of the organ systems of the body.

Instructions

Select a topic
Create a 10-15 minute presentation in PowerPoint or Google Slides
Key features to include:
Introduction- Body- Conclusion. Also include your bibliography on the end slide to give credit to where you obtained your information. Use at least 3 reputable sources for your research.
Describe the medical condition, which organ system, organ , tissue is involved, and the function of that cell/tissue/ or organ.
Describe how the condition is diagnosed, and treated including any experimental treatments
Include Quantitative statistics- how many people are affected? How effective are treatments? Other interesting and relevant statistics.
Power points are more effective with Graphics- pictures, charts, graphs. Talk about the slides but not to them. Slides with just text are ineffective. It’s a good idea to create a script and write this into the note section of each slide
Medical terminology- use at least 5 terms and explain their meaning
Provide 2 multiple choice questions (with correct answer and 3 incorrect answers) to test students on the organ/tissue you presented on. These will be used in a bonus test for your classmates. You can incorporate them into your presentation or add them at the end.
Speak clearly and use your own words.
Be creative. If you want to use props or make handouts- go for it.
Watch some TedTalks to learn how to make an effective speech. Practice practice practice
When it is complete, save a copy as a powerpoint file
