A literature review surveys scholarly articles, books, dissertations, conference proceedings, etc. relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory, providing a description, summary, and critical evaluation of each work. The purpose of a literature review is to offer an overview of significant literature published on a topic.

There are four stages to the development of a literature review.

1. Problem formulation-which topic or field and what are its component issues?
2. Literature search- finding relevant materials
3. Data evaluation-which literature makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the topic. At this point learn to distinguish between biographical, academic, journalistic, sources.
4. Analysis and interpretation- discussing the findings and conclusions of pertinent literature

Literature Review should comprise the following elements:

1. An overview of the subject, issue or theory, along with the objectives of the literature review
2. Division of works under review into categories
3. Explanation of how each work is similar how it varies from others
4. Describe how works are related
5. Are their conflicts in the literature
6. Conclusions as to which pieces of research are best considered in their argument, are most convincing of their opinions and make the greatest contribution to the understanding and development of there area of research.
7. Suggestions for future research
8. Most importantly- how does this literature review inform your work
9. Literature Review does not present new primary scholarship
10. Begin topic broadly and narrow to one sentence

Instructions for Journal Article Review

The goal of this assignment is to expose you to reading and understanding academic research. Read the article with the following questions in mind:

1. Who is the author? What are his/her credentials? When was the article written? What journal was it published in, be sure to give a full bibliographical citation.

2. What is/are the research question/s? What is the basic thesis of the article?

3. How did the researcher go about gathering data to substantiate his/her claim? Does he or she conduct interviews use secondary sources, undertake a survey, use a specific database, or uses other literature? When was the data gathered for the research?

4. What are the researcher’s findings and conclusions?

5. What do you think of the article? Was it informative? Was it well researched? What did you learn? If you were to undertake similar research how would you go about doing it?

6. Peruse the bibliography at the end, how extensive was it? What are a few of the sources that the author cites in his/her study that you want to consult on your own?

7. Write a paper answering all of the previous questions. Your paper should be clear, concise, succinct and to the point.

8. Once you start reading the journal articles you will be expected to make connections between the arguments that the authors make and compare and contrast the contributions to this body of literature.
