This assignment is divided into 3 different assignments. I have completed part 1 of the 3 (Topic Paragraph, which I will attach along with the professor’s remarks on what to work on). While the topic paragraph is done, the overall theme needs working upon is still rather vague, so you can add or take away from the topic paragraph and what the teacher has said when making the outline, & annotated bibliography, and later on the overall paper the best.
Rubric for Outline and Annotated Bibliography:
Outline and Annotated Bibliography: Before the final paper is due, you will submit a brief outline of your planned paper and an annotated bibliography. The outline should preview your
argument and your plan for the structure of the paper. The bibliography should list the sources
you have collected so far (at least 11), and 1-2 sentence for each source noting how you will use
it to make a factual point or to advance your argument.
The entire rubric for the paper( All 3 parts) :
Research Paper: You will write an 8–9 page (12 point font, double-spaced) research paper on a
topic of your choice. The paper should be submitted on Blackboard during the course’s scheduled
final exam time, in lieu of a final exam. You will be given a list of possible topics, but you are
welcome to select a different topic upon discussion with me.
Topic Paragraph: Midway through the semester, you will submit one paragraph (200-300
words) describing your chosen paper topic. What event, policy issue, or theoretical puzzle
related to globalization will you research? What are key terms and basic concepts? Which ideas
are hotly debated? What are some relevant country examples?
Outline and Annotated Bibliography: Before the final paper is due, you will submit a brief
outline of your planned paper and an annotated bibliography. The outline should preview your
argument and your plan for the structure of the paper. The bibliography should list the sources
you have collected so far (at least 11), and 1-2 sentence for each source noting how you will use
it to make a factual point or to advance your argument.
Paper: Your paper should have an introduction and conclusion, concisely describe the
background and key debates on the topic and have a clear argument. Additional instructions and
rubric will be distributed during the course, but it will require the use of sources beyond those
covered in class. You must cite all sources using a standard citation format (Chicago, APA, etc.)
Topic Paragraph (Part 1) Completed:
In the summer of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic had first hit the world, certain events and beliefs
would culminate in the death of George Floyd. George Floyd was an African-American who was
wrongfully murdered while in the custody of the Minnesota police department in May, 2020. At the
time, different political movements, such as Black Lives Matter, had quickly been gaining political
relevance within the U.S. Mr. Floyd’s death under police custody was the catalyst for mass protests
across the United States, with some quickly turning violent, dangerous, and deadly. Law enforcement
across America quickly became under fire from the media and many Americans have been skeptical
about the abuse police officers are capable of exercising. Many have viewed Mr. Floyd’s murder as an
act partially motivated by racism, which reheats the debate topics of racism, police brutality, and police
vs protestors. In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests, a Wisconsin teenager named Kyle
Rittenhouse shot and killed two protestors who were seen attacking him. This inadvertently raised the
debate of gun rights in America through a high-profile court case due to the use of firearms in
Rittenhouse’s self-defense. This paper will focus on the reactions and uprising that directly followed
afterwards, as well as the policy changes that were implemented across the U.S. Later on, this paper will
analyze the global impact of Mr. Floyd’s death from a social, political, and economic perspective. To
conclude this paper, his death and aftermath will be compared to similar cases where a person has died
which also sparked a mass uprising
Teacher’s comment for improvement when starting:
This is a good topic – my primary advice is: 1. frame the paper around your research question (what is your question). The paper is essentiall your research-based answer to the question. 2. makes sure to include a global/globalization dimension to your paper – it could be the spread of the protests internationally, the impact of racial justice advocacy networks across borders, or many other choices, but it should not just focus on the U.S. context; it is Ok to focus on reactions in the US as long as you also bring in globalization.
