the topic of the Research Paper has changed to “Presidential Elections, Political Participation, and Social Responsibility”.

Many correctly see voting in a Presidential Election as a basic component of any democratic system. Voting is the most important form of traditional political participation. Yet many individuals and groups tend not to participate in elections. This assignment taken with our class coverage of nominations, campaigns and elections of the US President, will try to address the dilemma in the context of our own obligations to government and civil society.

Assignment objectives:

1. This assignment requires students to apply what they learn from the Political Science field of study.

2. This assignment requires students to interact (theoretically or practically) with diverse communities, to achieve a civic aim.

3. Additionally, it asks students to reflect on what they have learned from their interaction with other communities in terms of:

(A) Their ability to adjust their attitudes and beliefs while working with a diversity of communities.

(B) Their understanding of the role of the individual/citizen in relation to regional and national entities.

(C) And requires students to reflect on the importance of involvement, how their civic engagement experience has benefited others 4and how this experience has strengthened their personal sense of social responsibility.

In this paper you must complete each aspect according to the assignment directives, also you should pay attention to the content rubric on which your grade is based, as indicated in the brackets at the beginning of each number.

1. [Application of Knowledge] – Using the textbook and your own research, write a short essay on why different communities (in demographic terms) in America have different voting patterns. Is this due to a difference in attitudes and beliefs or other obstacles (including institutional barriers)?

2. [Diversity of Communities] – After reading about political participation in the course, how could you work with diverse communities other than your own to increase political participation and voting? How might you have to adjust your own outlook or personal interests to achieve this greater good?

3. [Regional and National Communities] – Using the information from class and your own experience, what political obligation does the individual have to participate in local or national politics (including voting and other forms of participation like community participation, protests, consumer boycotts, etc.)? At what level (local or national) do you think individuals can make the most difference? Why?

4. [Civic Action and Reflection] – How have you been involved in civic or political action? Who benefited from your involvement? How has your experience with civic learning and engagement in the past and present shaped your attitudes about being more involved in the future? Do you think participation in other civic activities (including learning activities) will make people (including yourself) more likely to vote?

5. [Civic Identity and Commitment] – In conclusion, write a “reflection” explaining how your civic learning and engagement experiences (including the completion of this paper) have strengthened your self-knowledge and how this knowledge will contribute to an enhanced sense of commitment to public purpose and public action.
