Sade
You are an Academic Advisor at Lakewood State University (LSU) who works with undeclared first-generation students from diverse backgrounds. Sade is a second-year student you have been helping with academic planning over the past year. She came to you today asking for your guidance on what to do with the recent event on campus that has made her feel unsafe.
Sade described that two weeks ago, members of Turning Point USA attempted to disrupt a meeting attended by members of the Black Student Union, Students for Quality Education, and La F.U.E.R.Z.A. The university police responded to reports of this disruption and found that the Turning Point USA organizers were in violation of our campus’s policy that promotes opportunities for free expression while ensuring that operations related to LSU educational mission can best be fulfilled. Turning Point USA organizers were ordered to disperse. No member of the LSU Black Student Union, Students for Quality Education, or La F.U.E.R.Z.A. was detained or asked to disperse.
There have also been comments on social media posts related to this incident that many students, including Sade, found objectionable and threatening. Since the incident, Sade described not wanting to leave her apartment, difficulties concentrating in classes, frequent heart palpitations, shortness of breath, feeling nauseous and dizzy, difficulties sleeping, and feeling on edge.
Please describe your plans for advising Sade in context of what she has shared with you about her situation. In your response, address the following:
