Identify a management-level position (I chose hotel front desk manager) that you would like to hold at some point after graduation (maybe 5-10 years after graduation). Go online and visit Payscale.com to receive a salary report for that position. It will ask you to set up an account, however, there is no cost to obtain the report. You can use your SF State email to create an account (or an alternate email if you prefer).

On the upper right-hand side of the page, you will find three bars. Click on the three bars and it will take you to a menu.

Click on the down arrow next to “For Individuals”

Click on “Career Resources”

Enter the job title you are interested in and the location where you would like to learn more about

Then click “Get your salary report”

Then click “Just Exploring”

Then click “Individual”

It will ask you to enter the job title, the years of experience (you can enter in what you think would be interesting to you to learn about), and the city

It may ask you some questions about the job title (maybe in more detail) and the type of work. It may also ask about any licenses or certifications or special skills you have (or may have). You should select “full-time employment”. The more information you include, the more detailed your report will be.

It will ask you for information about the employer. You can enter information about a specific company or organization you may want to work for, or you can leave this section blank if you like.

It will ask you about education and demographic information. You can enter information in this section relative to your background or you can leave this section blank.

It will generate a report that you will see for a second or two and then a pop-up box should appear that asks you to sign up for a free account. Sign up (there is no charge, it will add you to their mailing list so use your sfsu email – you can always unsubscribe from the mailing list after you have the report). Verify your email address and then it will allow you to save or print your salary report.

Save the salary report as a PDF file. (You will only be able to generate 1 report for free). Once you have generated the report:
