Draw on the relevant readings, in class tasks and lectures from this quarter in order to explain the relationship between media representation, hegemony, and power. Explain how scholarly writers have suggested that meaning making is hegemonic. Explain how your own analysis in this paper either extends or challenges the arguments made by other scholars in the literature.
Method
Draw on the in-class tasks and lectures in order to explain to your reader meaning making and semiotics. Explain to your reader what semiotics is and how one undertakes a semiotic analysis. Explain the steps you took to undertake the analysis of the images for this paper.
Literature Review
In this section, draw on the readings you have examined in in-class tasks and explain what the current scholarly research suggests about football, national identity, corporate power and masculinity in the USA. Explain your position within this debate by explaining how your claim/argument is related to other scholarly arguments about this topic.
Description
This is the descriptive part of your paper. This is where you offer a systematic presentation of the significant codes of meaning that you have identified in your close examination of the two GQ covers. Your presentation of your findings should provide your reader with enough detail that they understand what you found. This is a descriptive, rather than analytical part of your paper.
Analysis
In this section present your analysis of the codes and how they support your claim/argument. Respond to the prompt using the evidence from your findings. This is the most important part of your paper. It is where you will get the most marks because this is where you clearly demonstrate your ability to synthesize the knowledge – about hegemony, meaning making, and the meanings of football – you have gained up to this point.
Conclusion
Summarize your argument explaining how you proved your point. Explain why such findings are important to either the scholarly community and/or to the society. What have you learned about media, hegemony and football? In what ways does the evidence help us understand the role of meaning making in our socio-political reality.
