The final activity is about exploring policy, practice, outcomes, and ableism as they relate to
your topic. Based on your new knowledge of the sociology of disability and your topic, what sort
of policies or practices could occur to influence social change or transformation, as it relates to
your topic/problem. This does not have to be legislation (though, it can be), but even just
changes in our way of thinking or approaching the topic, structuring the social world,
classrooms, teacher education, grocery stores, public spaces, ideology, personal views, etc. How
could this occur? What would need to happen to see positive changes?
Part 1: Discuss the role of ableism in your topic/problem. (1 Page) Look back to chapter 4
and the week 5 reading on Identifying Ableism for help.

Part 2: Influencing Change (1 Page) Use at least two concepts, theories, or ideas from
chapter 12.
A. Have there been any social movements that address your topic? Have disability rights
organizations discussed it at all? What have they done? Any policies or practices? What
progress has been made? What is left to do?
B. What would equity look like for your topic/problem? What barriers exist for
meaningful change?
