Critical Analysis: The readings and lessons for class explore the ways in which gender, as an idea that organizes society and as a force physically shaping our bodies, is socially constructed. Other course material explores how we use products to construct gender, sexual and racial/ethnic identities (to do gender). For the critical analysis part of the assignment, use insights and concepts from class readings to analyze your morning routine as a process through which you actively create your gendered identity. Type your analysis and explore these activities in a social context. Specific questions you will answer are:
please answer this question in a male point of view
How are your activities gendered?
What gender or genders are your activities and practices associated with and why?
What are some of the larger ideas about gender that might be causing a certain activity, process or product to be associated with your gender? In other words, what are the social meanings of your activities in terms of how each gender is typically defined?
Are your activities always gendered in the same way? In other words, are all of your activities either masculine or feminine, or do you move across what are typically thought of as masculine and feminine activities?
In what ways do the consumer products you use indicate specific gender roles or identities? How many products and what kind of products help you to produce a gendered identity?
Do any of these activities or products go against dominant gender norms? If so, how? What do you think allows you to go against gender norms? Would you be embarrassed for others to know about your activities or use of products? Why or why not?
What, in general, do you think is the relationship between consumer products and gender identity?
