The Research Paper
All students are to write a research paper as part of the final evaluation of this class. The paper should be 4-5 pages, double-spaced and consistent with the style and format being used within the HCC guidelines used in all college-level courses involving scholarly writing. There are five subjects for you to choose from –
1. Many people both inside and outside of the music industry feel that Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Michael Jackson are/were the most influential musical artists of the 20th century. Indicate if you feel this is an accurate statement and explain why, in detail with specific examples from their musical body of work. If you disagree with this statement entirely or in part, give a detailed explanation of your position and opinion.
2. What has been the most impactful genre (style) of American popular music since 1950? Give reasons and musical examples to support your position and opinions.
3. What is the significance of Woodstock in American popular music history? Why was this event so important in 1969 and why does it remain a “marker” in the timeline of American music and history in general?
4. Name three globally recognized musical solo artists or bands who are either Houston natives, or who are associated with Houston as a musical hometown. Describe their background and development that occurred here and the pathway(s) they used for success. Hint: There are several, some of whom have had #1 songs on the Pop charts and the list starts in the 1950s.
5. Describe the current state of American popular music. In what direction is it going, based on the achievements of the past? Name three current, iconic artists that you are feeling are leading the strongest current in today’s musical scene.
