• Case Study Paper: Intelligence Success or Failure (4 pages):
Write one 4-page (max) paper analyzing an example of a historical intelligence success or failure. Analyze how and why the historical event was a success or failure for the US government, and analyze how intelligence collection, analysis, government agencies and policy-making affected the outcome. Select one the following 3 case studies, and assess whether this should be considered a success/failure or both by US intelligence and national security personnel:
• The August 2021 US withdrawal from Afghanistan
Your paper should include the following:
o Select and support a thesis statement in which you analyze what was done well, or could have been done differently and by which agencies
o Demonstrate your understanding of US national security by explaining the state of US national security and intelligence at the time this event occurred
o Show your understanding of types of intelligence collection (HUMINT/SIGINT/OSINT etc.) and the role of more than one aspect of the analytical cycle (raw intelligence collection/reports/analysis/requirements)
o Discuss the role of more than one US intelligence agency (CIA, DIA, FBI, NSA, State INR, NGA etc.)
o Use citations from at least 5 or more credible unclassified sources such as news articles, journals and/or books about the event.

o Typed and submitted electronically, 4 pages maximum
o Font: Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman, Font size 12
o Paragraphs should have 1.5 line spacing and margins of 1 inch on all 4 sides
o Citation format: Chicago Manual of Style format
o The page limits are deliberate to ensure you make your argument concisely and effectively in a limited amount of space. Short concise papers are necessary in the intelligence and national security fields. It’s more challenging to write shorter papers than longer papers because you must get your points across quickly and succinctly.
