Short Answers Paper 1
For the past few weeks, we’ve been reading, discussing, and thinking about Hip-Hop feminism: now you’ll write about it for Short Answers Paper 1.
This document is eight-pages long. Following the questions that you’re going to answer, there are precise instructions for writing the paper along with a model of what your paper MUST look like. Read all eight pages and follow ALL the instructions.
You will receive a 0 if the assignment isn’t followed (questions aren’t answered/instructions aren’t followed) with NO chance to rewrite/resubmit.
If the format (how the paper looks) that’s modeled in these instructions isn’t followed, you will receive a 0 with NO chance to rewrite/resubmit.
Any paper that’s single-spaced will not be read and will receive an automatic 0 with NO chance to rewrite/resubmit.
1) What are two ways that hip-hop feminism is important to hip-hop culture?
Hint: You will first need to define hip-hop feminism in your own words. Then you’ll need to re-watch the videos posted in Course Content in Week 2 (9/8) and choose two of the many reasons given about why hip-hop feminism is important to hip-hop culture. You must name the videos where you get your information and give credit to the people you’re quoting (you’ll see an example of how to do this in the instructions below). You must also offer an analysis in each paragraph explaining why and how the reasons you say that hip-hop feminism is important to hip-hop culture are in fact important.

Hint: You will first need to define toxic masculinity in your own words. Re-read the assigned chapters in Chickenheads and God Save the Queens posted in Course Content in Week 4 (9/22) and Week 7 (10/12) and then choose two ways that hop-hop feminism contributes to the destruction of toxic masculinity in hip-hop culture and write about them. You must use at least one quote from Chickenheads and one from God Save the Queens, and you must cite your information. You must also offer an analysis in each paragraph explaining why and how the reasons you say that hip-hop feminism helps to destroy toxic masculinity in hip-hop are in fact true. Your quotes can’t be longer than two sentences: I suggest using a quote from each book in each paragraph. For each sentence in a quote, you need at least one sentence analyzing it.

3) Write a love letter to Black women in Hip Hop that’s two paragraphs long (each paragraph must be eight-to-ten sentences long). Include at least three Black feminist terms in your letter.
See the document I wrote posted in Course Content in Week 2 (9/8) titled “Black Feminism Terms.” Put the Black feminism terms in bold so that I can easily see them.
*********************************************************************
There are six videos posted in the Week 2 folder. You should use at least two of the videos to answer Question 1. Make sure your quotes in paragraph 1 and paragraph 2 in your answer are from different videos.
You MUST support your answers to Questions 1 and 2 with quotes from the videos and books, and you must analyze the quotes to prove your point. The quotes are the evidence you’re providing to support your claims about why hip-hop feminism is important to hip-hop culture and how hip-hop feminism helps destroy toxic masculinity in hip-hop culture.
Quotes have to be in quotation marks and they MUST be introduced by a signal phrase or seamlessly included in a sentence. Quotes that aren’t introduced with a signal phrase are called “dropped quotes,” something you want to avoid at all costs. I will post some links to pages that show how to avoid dropped quotes in Announcements.
Here’s an example of how to introduce quotes from videos:
In the video “Joan Morgan – Hip Hop and Feminism,” Morgan declares, “hip-hop feminism to me is really about a verb.” By this, Morgan means…
Here’s an example of how to introduce quotes from the books:

In God Save the Queens, Iandoli writes, “there was also something to be said about how the Nubian Goddesses wore their hair naturally and embraced pro-Black beauty, while the Sex Kittens subscribed to the European standards of beauty” (116). I understand Iandoli to mean…
You’ll do the same thing to introduce quotes from Joan Morgan’s book.
Do not italicize quotes.
Do not refer to any author, speaker, or activist by their first name because they’re not your friends. You should introduce them by their first name and last names the first time you refer to them in each answer, and after that you should use their last names, or you may call them “Dr.” (in the case of Joan
