Modules 8 and 9 have been a bit of a departure from our study of the planned change process—sort of. We’ve focused here on the skills (tools for your toolbox) around advocacy. Advocacy is truly a core part of social work practice. This week you listened to video clips where Jennifer Connor Godbey shared some of her tips for preparing for and engaging in legislative advocacy, and you listened to the Doin’ the Work podcast episode with Dana Brown. So, now it is your turn to do the work. Survey the landscape around you (professionally speaking) and pick a topic about which you want to write to one of your elected officials. Frame your letter as an advocacy letter: Share why you think they should care about/act on this topic/pending vote, etc. Utilize evidence to support your argument. AND, keep it short. Likely, you can submit your letter via an email if you’d like.
