Visual Analysis
Due by 9:30 am on Tuesday, 10/25 (via Canvas).
Format: 5-6 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, size 12, 1-inch margins.
Assignment:
Please choose two works from the following list (the images have been posted in the Week 10 module):
1. Heorhiy Narbut, The Sun of Labor 1919 cover
2. Mykhailo Boychuk, Shevchenko Day, 1920
3. Mykhailo Boychuk, Around the Apple Tree, 1920
By juxtaposing these artworks, analyze the central traits/ problems/ contradictions/ questions of Ukrainian national modernism of the 1920s and early 1930s. Choose a single topic on which to focus. Here are some suggested topics for you, but do not feel limited to them–you are free to come up with your own:
-reconciling national culture and socialism
-reconciling peasant life-style and industrialization
-the dialogue between modernity and tradition
-the significance of Biblical references
Organize your discussion around them. Perhaps, there are images that have something in common (stylistically, composition ally, formally, thematically) with the second artwork you selected for analysis? Do not give a summary of the film’s plot.
Remember, that you are not writing a compare-contrast paper.
Your paper must have a thesis–your clearly-discernible argument. Your title must give an indication of this thesis.
All the requirements listed on your first writing check sheet apply to this assignment (as well as to every paper you will work on in college).
Feel free to consult Ploy’s and Kassandra’s texts for reference. No need to use any other secondary sources.
