Write a SDG Policy Brief on an issue of your choice that will contribute to achieving the UN 2030 Agenda using an SDG Framework.
The SDG brief should highlight a number of key messages from the current scientific debate, using statistics, for the attention of public policy makers. The level of specificity of your brief should lend itself to policy action, e.g. consider whether an analysis of antibiotic resistance is more useful than a general discussion of global public health challenges. The focus could be on: (a) the review of up-to-date findings relating to a particular issue, (b) addressing a single issue of importance, or (c) presenting solutions to a problem or challenge. It could also present the “story” of a research finding that has great policy relevance but is not typically considered in the policy debate. The briefs are to be factual and clearly based on peer-reviewed literature. Contributions from both the natural and social science communities, from all disciplines, are highly valued and welcomed.
The Policy Brief should elucidate the following questions:
In what specific ways is your topic an urgent concern to achieve sustainable development?
What are the likely direct (and indirect) economic, human, social, and environmental outcomes if development continues in its current trajectory
What are the key policy recommendations to consider?
What are the risks/trade-offs of adopting your recommendations?
Approach to the Policy Brief Assignment
Decide on key message and approach
Do a SWOT analysis – what are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats surrounding the research issue
What SDG(s) are you most linked to?
