Scenario One: Disengaged Parent
Javon and Kennedy are siblings and both attend Uplift. Javon is a 2nd-grade boy and his older sister Kennedy is in 8th grade. They live with their mother who works two part time jobs and is
only home in the evenings after 6:30. Kennedy takes care of her brother during the day and gets him online to go to some of his zoom meetings but misses her own sessions most days. She will sometimes log in at night or on the weekend but rarely turns in any work. Javon completes no
work in the system. Dad sees them once every other week but doesn’t do any schooling with them. Each student’s advisor has reported the same things; mom wants her children to do well
and doesn’t have any other options for their schooling. Their local district has been closed and they cannot travel on the bus for an hour each day to attend the school that’s left open to them.
Mom is overwhelmed and has stated that she simply doesn’t have time to help them with their schooling. They are residents of Wayne County Michigan
Scenario Two: Disengaged Student
Kayla is a 10th-grade student with Uplift who has been with us for 2 years. She is repeating the 10th grade because she failed every class last year. Mom and Dad are married, Mom is home and available to her daughter throughout the day, and dad works a full-time job outside of the home. There is one other sibling in the home, a 2-year-old sister. Kayla logs into school aboutonce a week but never completes any lessons or turns in any assignments. If her advisor calls or texts, she will reply on her personal phone but never attends virtual sessions or follows through with plans made between her and her advisor. Mom reports to Kayla’s advisor that she cannot control her daughter and doesn’t always know where she is during the day, as Kayla frequently leaves to hang out with her friends. Mom has said that she herself didn’t graduate from high school but would like a better path for her daughter. Kayla does not currently have a job but has expressed interest in getting one in cosmetology one day. She will not be able to graduate on time if she doesn’t engage in school this year and start earning credits, as she is already 17 years old. The family lives in Charlotte, MI in a struggling, low-income neighborhood
