“Houston Community College requires all students to exhibit academic integrity in all their academic work. The principles of truth and honesty will be rigorously followed in all academic endeavors. A culture of academic integrity is built upon respect for others’ work, commitment to doing one’s own work, and intolerance for academic dishonesty in all its forms. It is important to report all academic integrity incidents in an effort to track repeat offenders. Repeat offenses may be subject to disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Dean of Student Success.

Before you submit this assignment, triple check the rubric and checklist and screenshot (and save) your submitted file to verify your file upload (in case it disappears after you turn it in).

CHECKLIST:

Read and review all the files in the Art Critique folder: https://learning.hccs.edu/faculty/stanley.kaminski/arts1301/assignments/art-critiqueLinks to an external site.
Use 5 paragraphs in the 5-paragraph format.
While aiming for 700 words, write at least 650 words and not more than 750 words. Penalties apply for too much or too little writing.
Insert a picture into page 3 so I can see what you are writing about. Remember to do this to avoid a 15 point penalty.
Use a proofreader and the HCC Writing Center or HCC tutoring services (UpSwing) before you submit written assignments.
Italicize, underline, or “place quotations” around titles.
Triple check your file submission upload. If you load the wrong file, you can add newer versions and the program gives me the newest first, so if you have an older, messed-up file, no worries, I just grade the newest file.
Take and save a screenshot showing your submitted file and including the date and time on your device. I do that when I submit files or digital reports to my bosses, just in case it disappears and I need to show proof that I did it. I have the screenshots. It’s a good practice for education, or for the business world.

Here is a duplication of the instructions:

Instructions for The 5 Paragraph, 700 Word Art Critique (Fall 2021 and beyond)

Critical thinking is “judgment thinking.” You are the critic. References or footnotes are not needed and should not be included. Do not cite anyone else’s writing. Do not quote anyone. A critique can be either a positive or negative judgement. You decide. You are the judge. Typically, people commend the artworks, but you can condemn it if you want. That’s ok. You can praise or scorn the artwork that you write about/critique/judge. Here’s a tip, remind the reader if you like the work or not in each paragraph. You can write things like “the beautiful space reminds one of a romantic view from a fancy hotel at the beach” or the awkward balance makes my head spin and my stomach queasy.” Remember, you are the critic. You are the judge.

Write about an artwork that you see in person or on the internet or in a book.

Write two pages (700 words), double spaced, with reasonable font sizes and margins. This document that you are now reading, for example, is Calibri 12 point with “normal” margins. Include a picture of the artwork so I can see what you are writing about. Insert the picture into your critique file after your 5th paragraph. It shouldn’t take away from your two pages of text, so it will be on the third page of your doc, docx, or pdf file. If your file is less than three pages, something is wrong. If your file is more than three pages, something is wrong.

Use complete sentences and rounded paragraphs. Neatness Counts. Grammar and spelling count. Be interesting. Write in an attention-grabbing manner. Use the HCC Writing Centers or the Academic Success Centers or other in-person or online “wrap-around” tutoring provided by HCC. I recommend it for everyone. By the way, I do not recommend bartleby tutoring through the bookstore. Save your money. Use HCC resources instead. You may be asking yourself, what is a rounded paragraph? Well, here’s what they taught me back in West Virginia in junior high:

Tell them what you are going to tell them.
Tell them.
Tell them what you told them.
Each paragraph contains one idea (or a close-knit set of ideas). You succinctly alert the reader to your idea. You feature your idea. You concisely remind them about your idea and conclude the paragraph. That gives the reader a natural break to start fresh with the next paragraph, and the reader will re-set mentally and anticipate the next paragraph/idea. Every paragraph is as long as a string. That means they are variable length, but I recommend 4 to 8 sentences per paragraph. Grammar and punctuation count, so use a proofreader and HCC tutoring services before you submit this.

This assignment should be submitted as a file upload through canvas by the deadline. Turn it in on time. Meet the deadline so you can get your credit. You are good enough to do this the honest way and write it yourself.

Best wishes. I look forward to reading your art critique. You can dooooo iiiittttt!!!!!
