Over the course of the last few weeks we have learned about the importance of policy to address environmental disasters from reoccurring. Identify an environmental issue and the policy that is being created to address it. The policy can be in progress, recently introduced, or a policy you believe needs to be developed. The policy examples can be either local policy (resolution or ordinance), federal or state legislation (bills), and if you’re not sure – send me a note!
Your specific assignment is to:
Find an environmental issue that has legislation being worked on, or already introduced, to address the issue – this can be a news source or research – attach article. Describe the specific issue and how it is impacting the planet. (HINT: think about some of the topics we most recently discussed and look them up!) (Example: Nitrogen oxide accounts for x% of total air pollution in the United States. In locationX (city), concentrations of nitrogen oxide were detected at xxPPM, X times higher than the EPA’s current standards of xppm.) (25pts)
Describe the policy that is being introduced, established, or existing policy and how it can resolve the issue (Example: It is estimated that a reduction in X% of new asthma cases will be achieved as a result of this policy implementation). – identify any challenges the policy might be facing, such as whether it is having difficult passing and why and what might need to be done for the policy to move forward. (50pts)
Describe why this policy is important and make an argument for why this policy needs to pass. (Example: Air pollution disproportionally affects low income communities and communities of color. According to (agency), X % of the total population affected by air pollution are people of color, x% are children between ages x and x. The health burden and economic burden of air pollution in communities of color is estimated to cost $x. Consequently, this strongly contributes to the intergenerational cycle of poverty in the United States.) (25pts)
